Do you think that when we search in google for a free software, the best in the one which appears first?
For example, we search for an antivirus and the first in the list is AVG. We search for a cd/dvd burner and the first one is CDBurnerXP.

Most of the time Google rank search by the number of hits
Not by keywords so since the best websites have high hits it shld be generally accurate
Look at downloads.com, cnet, zdnet, tucows... If you downlad a software from one of these sites there is some guarantie you dont get a "free" virus with it.
